In this week’s local newspaper The Journal was a piece written by George Owen about the Regal Cinema that used to be in High Street (where the Co-op is now). I recall the Regal showing the film ‘West Side Story’ for an entire summer season with Yours Truly in the audience several times. The Regal opened in 1937 and closed in December 1962.George has sent us this early 1960s aerial shot of the eastern seafront.
On the lower right is the Woolworths building at top of High Street and the cycling track on the prom opposite Queens Market. Lots of people on beach. At the shore end of the pier is Pier Amphitheatre (later renamed Gaiety Theatre). The big blue landmark on the prom is the Open Air Bathing Pool, and running along the south side of it – barely visible but there nonetheless – is the long, glass construction named Royal Floral Hall.
