THE ESPLANADE

The picture above was taken on the promenade near the top of High Street in – I would guess – the late 1890s and very likely on a Bank Holiday weekend like this one. Look how much has changed in a hundred years!

Incidentally the area shown here, and westwards to just past Water Street, was known as the Esplanade. It was wider, safer and offered a better sea view than other parts of the prom. The work to create the Esplanade was completed just before the arrival of the railway in 1848; the job cost £1,000 which was raised locally in a fundraising drive led by E. M. Lloyd Mostyn, MP.
