SKATERS AT LARGE

This is from about 1950 and shows passengers of a motor coach, or charabanc as we used to say, which bears words of warning: ROLLER SKATERS FROM SUNNY RHYL.

The left-hand section includes the ‘Rhyl Seagulls’ roller skating hockey team. Somewhere in the middle are ‘The Shirley Five’ including Gaynor Williams (was Jones) who supplied the photograph.

From a social history point of view, the picture harks back to an era when people in general seemed to have a keen sense of collective action and identified strongly with their home town.
