A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Liz Espley (was Roberts) and seeing a wonderful photo album that belonged to her mother who was Dilys Howell Roberts.
Dilys worked as a nurse at Royal Alexandra Hospital, Rhyl, from 1921 until she married in 1928; she is shown in the portrait below, and is the one holding the baby in the group photo.

The following snapshot of the Alex, taken from the rear (then a garden, now a car park) captures the west wing and part of the central building.

The black-and-white picture below shows children and carers from the hospital gathered together in a High Street shop to watch a street parade. The shop was L.S. Williams’ and it was on the corner where today you would find Next shop.

My thanks to Liz Espley, who was herself a nurse in Birmingham in the 1950s, for bringing the album and joining me in tea for two.
