In the 1950s if you tired of peddling round on tricycles and bikes opposite the Queens, you could peddle round in boats instead.The boating lake was in a fairly central location near the pier and Amphitheatre. Eventually the lake disappeared and a boating pool turned up to the west of the Coliseum Theatre; in recent years this was operated by Peter Daly of ‘The Grapevine’ bar in Water Street who, one of these days, may remember suddenly that he promised me a picture of it . . .
